Overview
Thoracic cancer refers to malignancies that occur in the thoracic cavity, including the lungs, esophagus, and other structures located within the chest. The most common types of thoracic cancer are lung cancer and esophageal cancer, both significantly impacting health and quality of life. Lung cancer is categorized into two primary types: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC), which have different characteristics and treatment approaches. Esophageal cancer affects the esophagus and is often associated with risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and certain dietary habits. At PK Das Cancer Center, we are dedicated to providing advanced care for patients diagnosed with thoracic cancer. Our experienced oncology team utilizes cutting-edge technologies and evidence-based treatment strategies to ensure optimal outcomes for our patients.
Symptoms
Symptoms of thoracic cancer can vary depending on the type and stage. Common symptoms include:
Diagnosis
Diagnosing thoracic cancer typically involves a comprehensive evaluation that may include a detailed medical history and physical examination by a healthcare provider. Diagnostic imaging tests, such as chest X-rays, CT scans, or PET scans, allow for detailed visualization of the thoracic structures and help identify tumours or abnormalities. A bronchoscopy may be performed to examine the airways and obtain tissue samples from the lungs, while an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) can be used to visualize the esophagus and collect biopsies for further examination. Additionally, laboratory tests, including blood tests, may provide useful information regarding the patient's overall health. Collectively, these methods are essential for confirming a diagnosis and informing the treatment plan.
Treatment
At PK Das Cancer Centre, treatment for thoracic cancer is tailored to the individual patient based on the type, stage, and characteristics of cancer, as well as the patient’s overall health. Treatment options may include surgery to remove tumours, radiation therapy to target and destroy cancer cells, and chemotherapy to kill or control the growth of cancer. Advanced techniques such as targeted therapy and immunotherapy are also available, aimed specifically at targeting cancer cells or enhancing the body's immune response to fight cancer. Our oncology team collaborates closely to create a personalized treatment plan designed to optimize care and improve the quality of life for patients battling thoracic cancer.
